When we think about wedding music, we probably all have a rather traditional idea of what would constitute appropriate music. In most cases, people tend to immediately think of organists, bagpipers and maybe even string quartets and, whilst it is true that these types of musicians have an important role to play during many wedding ceremonies or receptions, it is increasingly the case that the happy couple make much more individual choices about the type of music and musicians that they feel will make their day memorable.
For many professional musicians, weddings are now one of the main sources of bookings. This represents a major change for many of them, who would previously have been regular bookings on the pub or club circuit. It is no longer the case that weddings only have a single musical entertainer, as many will book 2 or three acts to perform throughout the day at different stages.
Now, it is all very well to comment on the more relaxed attitude towards wedding music that prevails across much of the UK, when actually accessing high-quality acts for your wedding is nearly as hard as ever. This is unfortunate, as nobody wants to book a poor quality act for any major life event, but especially not for a wedding. When it is supposed to be such a life changing event, we naturally want everything, including the wedding entertainment, to be perfect. However, most couples end up scouring their local newspaper to find something of reasonable quality or resort to asking friends of friends who have been married in the past few years. Not surprisingly, this is not the approach taken by professional wedding planners, who go to great lengths to find high-quality musicians that will enhance the wedding planners own reputation. What you really want is a specialist wedding music agency that has access to top acts at reasonable prices, but these are very rare.
The most impressive service I have seen in this regard is called I Do Music. This is a website for booking music entertainment for weddings which impressed me because it not only had acts covering just about every genre you can imagine, but a lot of the acts seem to come with very strong credentials and testimonials from previous wedding clients.
